Resarch project exploring European identity

Publication in a form of a free sheet distributed at subway’s entrances
Distributed in Toulouse, 5 December 2012
Launch, Lieu Commun, 6 December 2012

In 2010, we were awarded one of the Toulouse’Up grants in order to produce a participative project that would engage the public on the question of European Identity. Originally this project was a website which allowed the public to participate but what quickly became clear is that in virtual space people don’t exchange their views they post them. So, we create an object with which the public are familiar. To do this, we took a train from Berlin to Warszawa and back, we crossed the iron curtain, went from old Europe to new, from economic stagnation to growth. We brainstormed this Oedipus Complex, which had become our Europa Complex and from that experience this paper was born. Far from the cultural institutes and cafés that make up European Culture, we approach European identity not as an opportunity. Public transport is for us, the perfect metaphor for Europe. There, everyone is equally uncomfortable and this has given us the freedom. So you ask yourself, what is this paper ? It is an excuse to stop, and ask yourself where are you going? Where are ‘we’ going?
